MAAT

MAAT is the new Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, located on the banks of the Tago in Belém. The new building saw the collaboration of architects AL_A (Amanda Levete Architects), Aires Mateus & Associados, Vladimir Djurovic Landscape Architecture engineers from Afaconsult.

The structure is designed to allow visitors to walk over, under and through it, the Museum sits beneath an arch – one of the oldest forms in western architecture. The roof becomes an outdoor room, a connection between the river and the city. Below, the exhibition spaces are extensions of the public realm, with interconnected spaces for interaction. These spaces complement the galleries of the converted Central Tejo building. The facade presents almost 15,000 three-dimensional crackle glazed tiles that produce a complex surface.
