NIGERIA’S PLASTIC HOUSES

Nigeria has 186 million inhabitants and building houses is a real problem due to the economical situation. That’s why two NGOs proposed in 2011 to build houses with plastic bottles and recycled materials.

The project founded by the Association for the Development of Renewable Energies (DARE) with the support of the NGO Africa Community Trust aims to solve two problems at once: the lack of housing and decontaminate the environment from platic. The houses are bulletproof, fireproof and can withstand earthquakes, they produce zero carbon emissions and electricity will be powered by solar panels and methane gas. To create the houses, workers fill plastic bottles with sand, then they connect them with a mixture of mud and cement. To give an idea, in order to build a two-bedroom house you need 14,000 bottles. However, Nigeria’s people throw away three million bottles per day, that correspond almost to 215 houses.
