Dave Hakkens graduated in 2013 from Design Academy Eindhoven. Precious Plastic is one of his graduation projects.
Precious Plastic is a global community of people that aims to recycle plastic and developed open-source recycling machines to do it. He became aware of the idea that trash can generate value by seeing homeless people collecting objects from the streets and exchange them for money. He also made a trip into India’s slums and was deeply inspired by understanding how the inhabitants can deal with plastic. With his skills as an industrial designer, Dave developed a set of three machines that turns plastic into pellets to be used to build something new. He also developed tutorials on how to build them and machinery’s blueprints are distributed online for free. People started building their own recycling machines from all over the world.
