UNDER HEAVEN

Xu Zhen is a chinese artist whose work often takes the form of provocative sculptures, installations and paintings with the aim of uncover social taboos in contemporary China expecially in art, politics and society. This series, titled Under Heaven is a fun reference to Jeff Koons’ Made in Heaven art pieces. It is related to the Chinese concept of “tian xia” that means “the entire geographical world”, because the patterns suggest cityscapes and landscapes seen from the top or, in other words, from the perspective of god. He uses a particular technique to make them: he directly uses a pastry chef’s icing applicator to apply pigment. A pastry chef god will never be too bad.
