In June 2017, Beijing-based studio Vector Architects ended the renovation of an abandoned sugar mill into a resort hotel, Alila Yangshuo, situated on a hill between two karst mountains in the Guangxi region.
The sugar mill was constructed in the 1960s, the renovation project involved the preservation and repurposing of the existing structures plus the introduction of a new accommodation buildings that complement their industrial aesthetic. Designed by Ju Bin of Horizontal Space Design, the interiors aim to emphasize the connection between old and new.
