BICÈBIO, MAIS Project

BicéBio is an eco-sustainable cup in bioplastic material, designed by the young creative duo MAIS Projectpreviously on WeVux – and produced by Cormaf Srl.
The world of bioplastic has undergone a remarkable development in recent years. The replacement of traditional plastic (of fossil origin) with plant-based bioplastics allows to avoid the current abuse of fossil resources, which are generated only under certain geological conditions over hundreds of millions of years. On the contrary, the bioplastic industry directly uses the biomass generated by the Earth, allowing a more controlled regeneration of the source.

Furthermore, most bioplastics (such as the one used for BicéBio) have the advantage of being biodegradable and compostable in the industrial compost supply chain, thus returning to the earth as fertilizers, without polluting and eventually closing their life cycle with a favorable carbon footprint (LCA). Also bioplastics (some more than others) can be recycled without releasing harmful microplastics into the environment.

Nowadays, talking about bioplastics may rise some controversies: one of many, the volume of disposal of throwaway (both plastic and bioplastic) products. Hence the need to evolve as consumers in the direction of a more environmentally responsible approach, which is directed towards a circular economy which involves recycling, but also, where possible, the recovery and reuse of finished products. Despite the low environmental impact of bioplastics, the throwaway logic remains an unsustainable behavior by definition. In large catering, more than in other segments, the limits of this practice are highlighted due to the huge amount of pieces consumed daily. To date, recycling plants are unprepared to receive such a large amount of dishes to compost. For this reason, it will be increasingly important to insist on a “sustainable” design, from all points of view.

BicéBio is therefore, first of all, a conscious choice by the MAIS Project studio. In addition to being compliant with the European reference standards for food contact, stands out for its thermal and mechanical resistance; necessary features to allow a repeated and intense use in complete safety. The innovative bioplastic material is obtained exclusively from renewable sources, therefore totally independent from the production chain of traditional plastics of petrochemical origin. Thanks to its innovative material, is perfectly reusable after a simple passage in the dishwasher. This operation can be repeated without altering its quality.
BicéBio, thanks to its high performance properties, allows you to significantly reduce the consumption of disposable cups, in favor of a longer-lasting product, with a clean but original aesthetic.

The timeless design of BicéBio makes the object suitable for all circumstances. The decorative texture is reminiscent of the Sottsassian ‘Bacteria’: a tribute to the master of the Memphis movement and to the Made in Italy. And not only that, the texture allows a comfortable grip for the youngest. The bioplastic used, suitable for food contact, presents a warmer and more comfortable touch in comparison to the traditional cold plastics. BicéBio therefore presents itself not only as an eco-sustainable and smart product but also attentive to the human aspects related to the end user.

BicéBio is entirely designed and produced in Italy, is the eco-sustainable solution for every meal and is a combination of conscious design and a spirit of innovation branded Made in Italy.
The product will be presented for the first time during Milano Design City 2020 (5-10 October), at the Design Antidoto exhibition, at Fabbrica del Vapore. Curated by DOS Pixel City and Illuminazioni.
