BOUNCY LAYERS

Nendo (previously on WeVux) approached comfort in an alternative way with the project “Bouncy Layers”. The studio created the collection for the exhibition “Home Living Boundless Design” by KUKA furniture company – based in Hangzhou – that invited designers to create pieces based on the theme of intelligence.

Since the characteristics of KUKA is a range of upholstered sofas and lounge chairs, the team focused on an intrinsic value of softness, and decide to challenge the concept of comfortable furniture. The material is 1.5mm thick polycarbonate in sheets, its softness can be changed through lamination and bending. “Depending on the amount of space between laminated layers softness can be altered; with decreased curvature comes increased stiffness. In this way furniture can be made that is soft at the point of human contact but strong at top board and the joint of the frame.” The final aim of this project is to “take out” the essence of softness and make it visually apparent.
