Founded in 1988, Europan is a European competitions programme that takes place every two years, organized by a federation of 20 European countries. The Europan 13 topic continues with the Europan 12 topic on “The Adaptable City”: a city capable of managing times of change and keeping up with the speed of its inhabitants. A self-sufficient city is a city that thinks of its life-cycles synchronized with the production of resources.
Langarita-Navarro Arquitectos won the competition. The studio proposed an architectural strategy for an adaptive and self-sufficient city: interventions on pavements, circulations and cultural landscape that can coexist with other models of urban development in the neighbourhood. Its intention is therefore not to create aesthetic criteria, but rather to increase the diversity and adaptability by creating a structure that rapidly assimilates the new needs.
