RURAL URBAN FRAMEWORK

Rural Urban Framework (RUF) was born after a long journey through China; it is a research and design non-profit organisation, born in 2005 thanks to the collaboration between architects Joshua Bolchover and John Lin.

It is expected that by 2050 more than 75 percent of the world’s population will live in urban areas. The transformation from rural to urban is particularly significant in China, where 20 years ago it was reported that over 70 percent of Chinese people still lived in rural villages. The RUF projects range from building schools, community centers, hospitals, through designing and planning entire villages; their goal is to contribute to social, economic and spatial transformations. They collaborate with charities, private donors, Universities and Governmental Bureaus. Over the years, RUF projects have received numerous international awards. Working with low budgets and minimal access to technology, they strongly want to re-establish connections for communities through infrastructure. Until now, they have worked with more than eighteen rural villages in China.
